The Marketplace Fairness Act:Tilting the Playing Field

Last year, the U.S. Senate passed the Marketplace Fairness Act (MFA), allowing states to require online retailers to collect and remit sales taxes for each buyer’s state. Though the House of Representatives is unlikely to pass the bill anytime soon, the issue will likely come up again. Under the Senate bill, online retailers could collect an estimated $22 billion to $24 billion in sales tax that now goes uncollected.1

The Growing Benefits of a Warmer World

During the last century and a half, average temperatures have risen modestly, though the warming trend has stalled for the past 16 years. Contrary to popular belief, climate change thus far has had positive effects, and the net benefits of warming are likely to be positive for the foreseeable future.

Framing Medicare Reform

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) makes dramatic changes to the Medicare program in coming years. The provisions affecting Medicare are intended to slow the program’s spending. Lower future Medicare expenditures allows for higher federal spending on Medicaid and new spending on subsidies for individuals who purchase health insurance through the new insurance exchanges.
