Valéry Giscard d'Estaing fought in the Resistance during World War II. He was elected to the French National Assembly in 1956, and was appointed finance minister in 1962 by President Charles de Gaulle. During his tenure, France balanced the budget for the first time in 30 years. Also, he developed the concept of the European Monetary System. He served as President of France from 1974-1981, and was very involved in starting the G7 Summit. Currently, Giscard d'Estaing serves as President of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions.
