I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. There's a very funny book out now for anybody who's ever entertained the notion of leaving city life behind for the country. It's called "It Takes a Village Idiot," by Entertainment Weekly columnist Jim Mullen.
Mullen's wife wanted a weekend country house, and Mullen, a hardened manhattanite, grudgingly went along.
When he first arrives in the sticks, he only makes fun of drivers' habit of waving to each other, mocks the early stalinesque architecture of the community college, or looks in vain for more than one radio station in Walleye, the town in far upstate New York. But gradually, Walleye seduces him. He starts spending his weekends in Manhattan, not the other way around, and finally moves full time to the country. He warms to a place where avoiding deer on the highway is an art, stores will take your check without an i.d., and septic tanks are always a topic of conversation. It's a funny tale that could lure you to the woods.
