I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. Yesterday I talked about the huge new Bill Clinton budget, and the necessity for House Republicans to stand up and be counted. But will they oppose its spending increases?
We all know about the democratic left and what it stands for. But what about the republican left? The big congressional win in 1994 hasn't produced the victories conservatives had hoped for, partly because of a small group of a dozen republican liberals, mostly from the Northeast.
They aren't irredeemable; all voted for impeachment, most for welfare reform and the tax cut. But most are pro-racial preference and pro-minimum wage increases. And on two core issues of individual liberty, school choice and the free speech limitations of campaign spending "reform," they're hopeless. They're big government people who prefer collective decisions by government to personal choices by individuals.
And because the Republican House Majority is razor-thin, their votes can tip the scales when they line up with democratic liberals. We'll see how they shake out on shaking down the bloated Clinton budget.
