Former House Speaker and potential 2012 presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said he thinks the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will be repealed in two years.
“I think it will repealed probably by March or April of 2013,” Gingrich said at a news briefing in Washington. “And I think it’s unfortunate that the Obama administration is stonewalling serious re-thinking of this bill because in the form it came through, and in the way they wrote it, it’s clearly an indefensible bill.”
Gingrich, founder of the Center for Health Transformation, spoke about the Affordable Care Act at the National Press Club on Friday in advance of the law’s one-year anniversary next week. James Capretta, a visiting fellow at the Heritage Foundation, and John Goodman, president of the National Center for Policy Analysis, also spoke.
Democrats on Capitol Hill have chided their Republican counterparts for making efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act without offering substantive alternatives to healthcare reform. When asked what the GOP could offer in this area, Gingrich cited litigation reform and block grants for Medicaid as two places to start. The Center for Health Transformation is working on a Medicaid block-grant proposal that is expected in a few weeks, Gingrich said.
