On February 9, the NCPA welcomes Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles, two leading voices in the American fiscal policy and our national deficit, as a part of the Hatton W. Sumners Distinguished Lecture Series.

Everyone in Washington knows that the current fiscal path America is on is unsustainable-but few have the political will to enact the hard choices that must be made to get the country back on track.

Appointed by President Obama to co-chair the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles provide a candid, bipartisan discourse on what America's leaders must do to confront what many see as the largest economic, social, business and national security threat that the country faces. From taxes and spending to entitlement reform and encouraging business growth, Simpson and Bowles offer an enlightening discussion on solutions for bridging America's deficit gap.

About Alan Simpson

A trusted bipartisan leader to whom President Obama turned to with Erskine Bowles, President Emeritus of North Carolina University to Co-Chair America's debt reduction commission, Alan Simpson provides his candid views on politics, the economy and the hard and tough choices that lie ahead for America's leaders.

In a career hallmarked by a fearlessness of confronting the most intractable issues of our times, Alan Simpson most recently served as the co-chair of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, a bi-partisan group looking to erase the United States' multi-trillion dollar debt. Describing himself as someone who hates hypocrisy and pretense and has the temerity to say so, this is only the latest challenge taken on by Simpson who is best known for being a forceful voice for common-sense policy throughout his nearly two decades in the Senate. With quick wit and a straightforward style, Simpson tackles the most controversial of topics on the national agenda-bringing both honesty and sensible solutions for moving the country forward in these most uncertain of political times. Formerly a visiting lecturer in Political Science at the University of Wyoming-his alma mater-and formerly the director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Simpson provides audiences with anecdotes, humor and cutting-edge commentary on politics, the media, Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid reform, the economy and much more. He enjoys taking questions from any audience.

About Erskine Bowles

A veteran of business and government who-along with former Senator Alan Simpson-Erskine Bowles was appointed by President Obama to co-chair America's debt reduction commission, is at the center of the national dialogue on what must be done to address America's deficit crisis.

A successful businessman who leveraged his experience in the private sector to control spending in the public sector, Erskine Bowles most recently served as the Co-Chair of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, a bipartisan group looking to erase the United States' multitrillion-dollar debt. Early in his career, Bowles worked for Morgan Stanley and founded his own financial investment company before joining the Clinton Administration to run the Small Business Administration and eventually become President Clinton's Chief of Staff. As Chief of Staff, he was a pivotal negotiator in getting America's first balanced budget in decades. A leader who himself had to face down budget woes as the recent President of the University of North Carolina system which depended on a state in a fiscal crisis for much of its funding, Bowles discusses what leaders on both sides of the aisle must do to bring America's spending and deficit problems under control before the consequences become dire for generations to come. Himself a Democratic operative and candidate for office, Bowles also trains his eye on the American political landscape and provides his candid views on the current issues making their way through Washington.
