Focus Point – Bush Speech

Hello, I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis.

Liberals had a bad two days last week.

Monday, they got the results of the Miami Herald recount of all the Miami-Dade County undervotes in the Presidential Election. Turns out George Bush won Florida outright after all. There goes the prime liberal argument: The Bush Presidency is illegitimate. Sorry guys, it's for real. Bush won.

Then, Tuesday night, they had to watch a confident President Bush wrap congress and the country around his little finger with a speech that spelled out the reasons for a tax cut, debt reduction and a sensible education policy.

You knew what a home run the performance was when even the tv commentators couldn't resist praising it. Tim Russert called it "confident and comfortable." Peter Jennings said even some of Bush's harshest critics thought he'd done well. My favorite was Chris Matthews, who said Bush played the opposition like a banjo.

Yep, it was a rough week for liberals..

Those are my ideas, and at the NCPA we know ideas can change the world. I'm Pete du Pont. Next time, Ronald Reagan in print.
