I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. I'd like to recommend a book by columnist Bob Greene. Greene wanted to write about his dying World War II veteran father and the war that shaped him and many of his generation. In the process, he got to know another man who lived in his home town of Columbus, Ohio, a man who had consistently avoided publicity and in fact had dodged Greene's interview requests for years: Paul Tibbets, the man who dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
The story runs on parallel tracks: Greene explores his father's life and Tibbets gradually opens up about the mission that ended the war about which Tibbets has never had second thoughts. Through talking to Tibbets and listening to tape recordings his father had made years before about his service experiences, Greene came to a fuller understanding of the generation that won the war and secured the American century. It's both a personal and a historical document, and it works on both levels. Not for nothing is the book called *Duty.*
