Focus Point – Independence Day

I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. Today, for the fourth of July, I'd like to celebrate independence — for people who don't have it. When you fly your flag today, or shoot off a bottle rocket, or just do whatever you please because you can do it, remember someone who can't. Ever. Because the liberty we take for granted is a special case. So think about:

A Christian in China.

A woman in Afghanistan.

A Kurd in Iraq.

Someone who believes in liberty in North Korea.

A political prisoner in a jail in Cuba.

An amercing child in a crumbling, dangerous, big city school who's a voucher away from the rescue a real education provides.

An ethnic or national or religious minority in the Balkans or Russia or countless other places around the world.

What we celebrate today began 225 years ago. But not everywhere. Freedom matters a lot.

Those are my ideas, and at the NCPA we know ideas can change the world. I'm Pete du pont. Next time, the Irish economy.
