So I was happy to see that August publication take note of the fact that both sides on the school voucher debate agree that vouchers are inevitable.
In fact, support is growing fast — especially in poor neighborhoods, where the worst schools typically are. So many more states and cities will eventually have voucher programs either through legislation or referenda.
There are five voucher programs working now, and more than 25 State Legislatures are considering them. There have been setbacks in court, but the course seems set: minorities, who are traditionally liberals, are especially pro-voucher and vocal about it. After all, they see the places their kids have to go to school. So anti-voucher limousine liberals will have to decide which way to turn: to their constituents, or to the teachers' unions they've been supporting for years. I think I know the answer and here's a hint: the unions can't vote them out of office.
