Focus Point – What the Polls Really Say

I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. To read the papers, you'd think George Bush had fallen so far in the polls he should just concede. But wait.

According to the most authoritative poll, the Voter.com Battleground 2000, Al Gore simply can't move ahead. Basically, all George W. has to have is a few days with no gaffes and he's right back in the race.

Why? Because Gore refuses not to be stupid. The Boston Globe — virtually a publicity arm of the Democratic party — catches Gore in a lie about his mother-in-law paying more for medicine that his laborador retreiver. Joe Lieberman rips Hollywood for destroying American morals — then takes their money at a fundraiser. Gore turns out to have known all along that the fundraiser at the Buddhist Temple was just that — a fundraiser.

Bush's slips are of the most trivial variety. Gore's reflect real flaws. This race is still Bush's to lose, and the polls that count have never changed that impression.

Otherwise, why hasn't Al Gore taken control?

Those are my ideas, and at the NCPA we know ideas can change the world. I'm Pete du Pont. Next time, the oil non-emergency.
