The NCPA and the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation are proud to host journalist, lawyer and author Glenn Greenwald for a luncheon on Friday, April 3rd, at the Omni Mandalay in Irving, Texas.
When National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden wanted to alert the world to the astonishing degree of surveillance by the government, he sought out Glenn Greenwald. Snowden waited months before entrusting the evidence to him, only after Greenwald agreed to security precautions and encrypted his computer. Greenwald’s most recent book — No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State — depicts his 11-day interview with Snowden in Hong Kong, where the former contractor had fled from the United States. During that interview, Snowden revealed to Greenwald the extent of the NSA’s vast surveillance system and the extraordinary spying tactics of the American government.
The release of the Snowden files sparked a nationwide debate over the proper line between national security and individual liberty and privacy. Greenwald will tell the audience what led to Snowden downloading massive amounts of classified documents and ultimately sharing those files with Greenwald and the world. He will address Snowden’s plan for sharing these documents — and what might be the next step in this ongoing situation.
