Just ahead of the upcoming annual report of the Medicare Trustees, the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) will hold a Wednesday Capitol Hill briefing on health care spending and the Affordable Care Act, led by former Medicare Trustee and NCPA Senior Fellow Thomas R. Saving.
The recent slowing of health care expenditures is already reversing, and health care spending will continue to rise over the coming years, according to the new NCPA report.
In addition to Dr. Saving, NCPA Senior Fellows John R. Graham and Andrew Rettenmaier will speak at the July 23rd briefing in the Rayburn House Office Building. The briefing will focus on the impending increase in health care spending, which the new report attributes to key provisions of the Affordable Care Act.
While health care spending has been decreasing over the past several years, it began increasing again in 2014, according to the report.
- Real per capita GDP growth over the last year, from the first quarter of 2013 to the first quarter of 2014, was 0.8 percent, while real per capita health care spending experienced a higher, 2.2 percent growth rate.
- Preliminary estimates of health care spending as a share of GDP indicate an increase from 17.2 percent at the end of 2012 to 17.4 percent as of the first quarter of 2014
Saving, Graham and Rettenmaier will address several key questions, including:
- What effect the Affordable Care Act is having on health care spending
- Whether health care spending will outpace other spending in spite of the ACA, and
- What predictions can be made regarding the future of health care spending.
