Live Firing Line Debate Taping to Address School Choice Issue
Dallas — Government Should Not Discriminate Against Private Schools, resolved. The school voucher issue will be the topic of argument when the National Center for Policy Analysis and CEO America present the live taping of William F. Buckley, Jr.'s Firing Line Debate June 9th at Texas Christian University.
As experimental school voucher programs pop up around the country, an exciting group of experts will converge at TCU's Ed Landreth Auditorium to dispute the pros and cons. Michael Kinsley, the editor for Slate online magazine and former host of CNN's Crossfire, will have his hands full serving as moderator when commentator and columnist William F. Buckley, Jr. teams up with NCPA Policy Chairman, Gov. Pete du Pont, CEO America Chairman James Mansour and Messmer Catholic High School Principal, Bro. Bob Smith to argue for the resolution. Among those joining to oppose the resolution are ACLU Executive Director Ira Glasser, National Education Association President Bob Chase and counselor to President Clinton, Bill Curry. A fourth opposition candidate is to be named shortly. The two-hour Firing Line Debate will be a warm up for the taping of two 30-minute Firing Line programs on the same issue. Both programs will be hosted by William F. Buckley, Jr. The tapings are free and open to the public with general seating available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Audience members must be seated by 1:45 p.m. and must remain seated during the program. The initial two-hour Firing Line Debate will start promptly at 2 p.m., June 9 in TCU's Ed Landreth Auditorium. A taping session for the two 30-minute Firing Line programs is scheduled from 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. All three programs will be broadcast locally on KERA Channel 13 and other PBS affiliates across the country. The exact air date has not been finalized.
