Saving & Palmer Nominated as Social Security and Medicare Trustees

NCPA Senior Fellow Selected to Serve Unprecedented Second Term

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 4, 2005) — Thomas R. Saving, senior fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA), a Dallas-based think tank, will be re-nominated by President George W. Bush to the post of Public Trustee of the Social Security and Medicare Trust Fund. The White House has announced their intention to nominate Saving and John Palmer, dean of the Maxwell School at Syracuse University, marking the first time public (outside-the-government) trustees have been nominated to serve a second four-year term.

The two economists were first appointed by former President Bill Clinton. They are largely responsible for the Trustee’s unusual practice of reporting unfunded liabilities the way private businesses would.

“It’s hard to think of any economists better suited for this position than Saving and Palmer,” said NCPA President John C. Goodman. “Their continued service will be critical to the efforts to reform these programs.”

Saving and Private Enterprise Research Center (PERC) at Texas A&M University colleague, Dr. Andrew Rettenmaier, are the primary developers of NCPA’s research on Social Security and Medicare and the implications of various reform proposals. Saving and Palmer must now be re-confirmed by the Senate.
